HP 79.XX.YY error code

Firmware exception (often triggered by a job)

HP error 79 usually indicates a critical exception in the controller firmware, most often triggered by a particular print job or network event. It is a more serious counterpart of error 49.

What does this error mean?

The printer may restart itself after error 79. If the error always occurs with the same document, the job is the trigger; if it occurs randomly, a firmware or memory fault is also possible.

What can you safely try?

  1. 01Switch the printer off at the main power switch, wait a few minutes, then switch it back on. Some temporary faults clear this way.
  2. 02If the error appeared after a particular print job, clear the print queue on the computer before trying again.
  3. 03If you can, update the firmware and try printing with a different driver, such as PostScript instead of PCL or the other way round.

When should you call a technician?

If the fault returns even after a firmware update, call a technician: a memory or mainboard fault may be responsible.

Do you rent out or manage printers?

If you manage the printer at a customer’s site, you can record the fault on site in PrinterMS using QR issue reporting, and any parts used are automatically added to its service history. See printer fleet management.
